As mentioned previously, Skai aka c(hubby) brought me to Teppei Restaurant for my birthday dinner. Honestly speaking, I had not expected it. Have never mentioned about Teppei nor had considered it before.
All I knew about Teppei back then?
Technically, it wouldn’t have been my first choice to celebrate my birthday as I didn’t know anything nor considered Teppei before.
But after being together with Skai for like 6 years, I guess we’ve reached a stage that we’ll instantly know what each other would like.
**insert sappy awww sounds here**
And yes, he was correct!!!!!!! Bingo! He actually booked Teppei a while back and went through so much difficulties to get a slot during my birthday weekend! <3 (No wonder his face cramped up when I told him that BFF was going to Teppei for her anniversary! HAHAHAHA)
I loved my experience at Teppei so much that I wanted to make reservations immediately! Unfortunately, they are fully booked till July! Oh my tian!
Teppei was an extremely small restaurant located at the fairly newish Orchid Hotel in Tanjong Pagar. It’s so small that it couldn’t sit 21 pax at one seating.
For dinner, one must have a very elusive reservation in order to be fed by the gods chefs at Teppei. Just check out their complicated booking system! And it’s Omakase style. Meaning you eat whatever they prepare, leaving it up to the chefs to decide. Usually according to seasonal catches etc.
If you do not eat anything funky, or if you are allergic to anything in particular, it would be best to inform the staff.
The two seatings available during dinner were:
1) 6:30pm – 8:20pm
2) 8:40pm – 11:00pm
Skai had booked the later slot as he didn’t wanted us to rush plus it would be nice for us to relax and not think about rushing our meal.
This was how the restaurant basically looked like. We were all seated at the counter and we didn’t have a choice of where to sit. Honestly, it doesn’t matter if you are at the corner or centre, you’ll receive the same Teppei experience.
We were first served with tea.
Chef Teppei hard at work.
And asked for our preference for main course and dessert. Both of us had opted for the Sashimi Rice. For desserts, I opted for Sesame while Skai opted for Salt(ed) Caramel.
Aside from that, we had two choices of Omakase to choose from. The $60 and $80. We opted for the $80. These were the dishes that came with the $80 omakase.
I felt that the Sashimi Platter was fresh ad it was quite a generous portion served! Totally whet my appetite for more!
I super enjoyed the Sushi roll! But why do the girls get a smaller portion than the men!!! Anyway, I took an extra bite from Skai’s roll since… I was a piggy it was my birthday!
There were a lot of stuff that I didn’t know what I was eating. I guess Omakase really forces one out of their comfort zone as I was forced to try things I would never normally would order. Heh.
We were also served Popcorn Popped rice! Doesn’t have a very distinct taste, it was just well, “airy” but I really liked nomming on it!
I don’t know what is this but I’m guessing Ikan bilis.
Time for beef! Wagyu beef if I’m correct! LOVE IT!
Troll moment by one of the chefs. Some of us got wasabi placed in ours. Some of us meaning = ME!
Thank god I love wasabi.
Yes, Chef Teppei was on it too. TROLL!
This seafood soup was super delicious! I bet Esther would love the crab!
Grasshopper on a stick. Quite yummy actually.
The Sashimi Rice was super delicious! I love how the sashimi almost melted down my throat!
Although we both ordered the Sashimi rice, only Skai was served it… because..
I got a Sashimi Birthday Cake for well… my birthday! Skai had informed Teppei (thanks to a pro-tip from Elaine!) before hand and they had arranged for a Sashimi Birthday Cake!
I hardly get birthday cakes but when I do, it’s beyond awesome! LOVE IT!
Desserts while ordinary, were a great roundup to a great meal!
Chef Yamashita Teppei and his crew were extremely cheeky and great company! While they did not have much time to chat as they were busy preparing awesome dishes for us, they were always smiling and sweet to us. Aside from the occasional cheeky pranks (they behaved like little school boys!) I thought that they were super friendly.
I love my birthday celebration at Teppei Japanese Restaurant at Orchid Hotel. Problem is… I’m hooked! I wanna go back again!!!!!
